Moon Sugar Decal Review

It’s the last day of 2013 and I thought I’d end off the year by doing something that I’ve been meaning and wanting to do for a while. David from Moon Sugar Decals contacted me and offered a free sample of their nail transfer decals for review. You can visit their site here.

I was very impressed that these were sent all the way to South Africa, no problem. I received them a while ago and I’ve been so excited to try them. I’ve put together a short How To as well as a review of the product and my experiences.

I’m going to skip ahead to the final result, as I think it’s really great. I’m so happy! If you want to know more, you can read further. Here is the final mani:

Here’s the finer print for those of you who want to do this at home:

I received 2 types of decals: A skull rose design and pink Breast Cancer Awareness Ribbons. The decals come in long strips with between 10 and 13 decals (my skulls had 10 and the ribbons had 13).

This is what you will need to do a decal/transfer manicure:
what-you-need

Step 1:
First things first, you need to apply a base coat and whichever undercoat you would like. I used Revlon COLORSTAY “090 Sorbet” for the accent nail. The other nails have Revlon “Sparkle Aplenty” on them. Paint the required number of coats and wait for them to dry completely.

Step 2:
Now, the first thing I noticed that was different from other transfers I’ve used is that you do not need to remove a top plastic layer. The plastic later on top actually has the design attached to it (so don’t tear it off).

Cut the decals as close as you can to the image.

Step 3:
Using your tweezers, dip your decal into the warm water.

Step 4:
Place the transfer on your nail and slide it off.

Step 5:
Paint two coats of top coat on top of the decal. And that’s it! Easy 🙂

What do I think?
All in all, I was impressed with the quality of the transfers. The detail and clarity of the images are amazing once they are on your nails. The only confusing thing is the transparent layer on top which was different to what I was used to. I didn’t know to cut it so close the the image. But hopefully my trail and error will help you with yours.

I would really recommend these decals, the product is great and they have a good selection of different images.

Tutorial: Hand-painted Roses

I’m extremely happy with how these turned out! The nice thing about roses is that they don’t have to be absolutely perfect to look gorge! Here’s the final result:

I got the inspiration from Katy Perry. I absolutely love her nails, she always has such crazy designs. See the rose mani below (top left)?

It’s Movember Baby!!!

It’s that time of year again folks! That suspicious stubble chilling on your boyfriend/crush’s top lip just gets longer and longer, thicker and darker. Eventually, you have to think to yourself: “Something is going on here!”. And you would be right. It’s Movember baby!

I’m not sure about the rest of the world, but Movember is a pretty big deal in South Africa. I was looking at the website and it is so well done, I just had to do a mani! They’ve really gone all out this year making the website look grungy, masculine and funky. Really, it’s just full of wolves, snakes, lightning bolts, etc. Check out the international Movember website here.

So all the men out there (not sure how many will be reading a nail art blog) pledge to grow your mustache this month to promote awareness for testicular cancer, prostate cancer and mental illness. It’s hard to believe that all the hairy faces this month are actually growing their ‘tashes for a cause. But what an awesome way to initiate conversation and increase awareness.

Here is my mani (you kind of have to see the website to understand, so check it out):

Halloween Challenge: #6 Free for all

Happy belated Halloween to everyone! It’s not widely celebrated in SA, but I’m sure it was huge in the US.

These are a bit late, but it’s the final day of the Halloween Challenge and it was a free for all. I’ve seen this style of manicure a few times this Halloween and I love the idea. I did a sunset/evening landscape with gravestones, an eerie tree and some mist. I hope you all like it!

Halloween Challenge: #4 Gothic

I hope you have all had a fabulous weekend! I’ve had a very relaxing and restful one.

Here is my design for the “Gothic” theme. I’m not sure if it’s really Gothic, but I tried! I used a Modi deep red that I had from Korea (number 68 – my Korean is quite rusty, but I think it’s called “Riding Hood”). I left some of the nail natural. I also went a bit gem-crazy. It’s nice to go over the top once in a while 🙂

Hallowe’en Challenge: #2 Pumpkins

I had a bit of a hard time with this topic. My nails are SO short at the moment, it’s very difficult to paint such detailed images on such a tiny surface. But I tried my best and I hope you like it.

We had a Wellness Day at my work on Friday and I got a free mini-manicure. So the base coat for this is an Essie polish. I then sponged on a bit of orange (to make it more pumpkin-like). I then hand painted 2 jack-o-lanterns and an attempt at a gravestone (you can’t really see the R.I.P… oopsie).

I’m not sure if anyone noticed on my new header and the logo on this post, I’ve designed a new Lekker Lacquer Logo. I’m really loving it! I’ve done it in about 10 different colours so I can just stick it on to my pics 🙂

Halloween Challenge #1: Scary Movies

The first of the Halloween Challenge, and I must say, I’m extremely excited! I love how it came out and I hope you all love it too!

I decided to do one of the “classic” cheesy scary movies, Scream. I watched Scream 4 over the weekend, although most of the horror came from the terrible script and acting, a part of me actually enjoyed it! I love, love, love how this mani came out!
